ADVERTISING

ADVERTISING

We have seen a number of adverts and commercials around the topic of the Super Bowl and Christmas. Now it is time to learn how to talk about commercials in English, discuss advertising and comment on some memorable ads!

Please Discuss:

- How would you define advertising?

- Is advertising a good or bad thing? Why?

- What advertisements do you think are more effective, those on TV, on newspapers, on the radio on the Internet or in the street?

- Do you think advertising could be considered and art?

- Do you think advertising is somehow lying about products?

- What products depend more on advertising?

- What factors are important when making a good advertisement?

- Are you easily persuaded to buy things after seeing or hearing an advert?

- What regulations should be applied to adverts to protect consumers?

- Have you ever been angry about an advert?

- Whinch companies , in your opinion, produce the best ads?

- Do pop-ups on the internet bother you? Why?

Now let´s comment on some advertisements!

Advertising - What psychological tricks do they use?   ESLvideo

Questions:

What is the video about?
Different kinds of commercials.
Strategies used in advertising.
How to make a good advertisement.

The first principle is very effective because...
What they sell is cheap.
When you buy from them, they give you something extra, like a book or a flower.
they give you something and then you feel obligated to buy them something in return.

Is it a good strategy to make people believe a product is rare?
No, people only want successful products.
Yes, rare products are more attractive.
Yes. Collectors will be attracted to the product.

Are famous people effective in advertising?
Yes, because people believe them.
Yes, especially sportsmen and athletes.
No. It has been proven that famous people are less effective.

What is the principle of commitment?
First, we get information about the people. Then, we release the product.
First, we tell people that the product is good. Then, people are more attracted to it.
First, we introduce an idea or opinion. Then, we make people buy the product to support the idea.

When people around us buy a product...
it means the product is good quality.
we don't buy it because we want to be unique.
we are more willing to buy it.

  3. Hi! I am Maricruz
I would like to share with you some ads that are especially interesting for me. I hope you like them.
The first one (really two parts) is a Spanish ad of 1988 that was very important in the history of Spanish advertising, getting for Spain, for the first time, the Grand Prix of the Cannes Advertising Film Festival. It is carried out by a dog named Pippin. I think is amazing and memorable. Do you remember it? Do not you think it could be applicable today?
The second one is the 2014 Christmast's of John Lewis bis stores. This ad reminded me a lot of Pippin's ad, becouse has some similar ingredients: a child, a pet, a Grand Prix...and a emotional story that make you think...But after, I have think that the two ads are opposite...¿What do you think about it?

The last one is an ad that shows that the Ax brand can make non-sexist ads to target men ... It's about time! It was not so difficult...Congratulations!

  4. Hi everybody!

This is not a commercial, but a video about some children's reactions to some fashion ads. It is a new topic on the debate, with a lot of angles...

The video is in Spanish, but the debate is universal!

    1. Fantastic!! So much to comment on this video. I recently read an article about how women are protrayed in commercials and it was pretty much the way these children see them...Thank you for bringing this subject up!

This is not my favourite commercial at all, but I've chosen this old degradated spanish advertisement because people used to criticize it arguing it is sexist. And I definitely agree. Nevertheless, I do not think that women are mistreated in it, but men. Who is presented as somebody that take its purchase decissions under the primary push of sex? Yes, the answer is men. Indeed, men are treated as so elementary animals that it is sufficient to estimulate them with a rubber fitted suit, showwing teats as much as possible, as to induce them to buy anything. Don't misunderstand the underlying message: women are the agent; men are the object.

  7. Hi everyone!

    Here it is

I would like to share this ads of the insurance company Geico because I think they reflects well how advertisers and brands have to constantly reinvent their way of advertising on the Internet.
This campaign reminds me of the #mannequinchallenge that has been viral lately in the network which consisted of recording people who remained like frozen while a camera filmed them.

I have found these advers very appealing because their creators have managed to use the difficulties of pre-roll ads in their favor, getting exactly what seemed more difficult: that people do not skip their advertising.

Hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

  8. Hello, Ines:
Here you have the homework that Maricruz and me promised to prepare for next Monday.
In the following links, you can find two different documents that include a selection of words related to advertising. We know that they are maybe too long, but we have considered that it could be interesting to have a broad document (or two), to work with.
As we usually say in Spanish, “it is easier to remove than to add”. :)
See you in a couple of days.

  9. Hi everybody!
I would like to share with you this Out Of Home (OOH) campaign launched by Spotify last Autumm in several countries around the world. I have choosen this campaign because of its use of big data as the inspiration for its creativity which, as far as I am concerned, it is the first time that big data is been explicitely used like that.
